Visiting Family

Our son’s family came to town this past weekend.  We were celebrating our 2 grandsons’ birthdays and we wanted to watch the Super Bowl together.

Saturday was fun but cold.  We went geocaching again and had a great time. (If you don’t know what this is see my previous posts here.)  The fun thing about geocaching is that the whole family can participate.  We enjoyed it so much but it was windy and cold so we only went to 5 different  sites and we found the caches at 3 of the sites.  Then we headed to our favorite seafood restaurant for lunch.

We decided to do something a little different for the boy’s birthday so on the way home we picked up a king cake.  A king cake is a New Orleans Mardi Gras tradition and we love them, so we thought it be a nice change from the normal birthday cake.

Traditional king cakes have a cinnamon roll texture and… no fillings.  In recent years people have started adding fillings to the cake like bavarian cream, apple, blueberry, cream cheese or strawberry.  We decided on a cake that was apple and cream cheese.  Oh, it was soooo good!!  And the boys enjoyed their birthday party.

Sunday we went to church and then home to get all the goodies ready for watching the Super Bowl.  It is a tradition to have all sorts of food available and everyone helps themselves to whatever they desire.  We had pigs in a blanket, meatballs in sauce, sandwich fixings, homemade pizza rolls, chips, chocolate chip cookies, and assorted chips and dips.  Everyone ate way too much and enjoyed it all.

But the best time of the whole weekend was the Super Bowl.  We are from New Orleans and have been Saints fans for all 43 years of their existence.  The Saints are our family team and even though our son lives in South Carolina, he is still a true fan.  Our excitement and enjoyment of the game can never be completely discribed so I will just say-it was great!  The culmination of our fun weekend is the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl.  Wow, I never thought I would be able to say that and at last I can!  Geaux Saints!!!
