I have been making our laundry detergent for over a year and cannot believe the savings. I use this recipe (copied from the Duggar family website):
Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine
1 Cup – Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax
Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken. Soap forms a gel and will need to be stirred well before using.
The gel is pretty thick and the bucket is deep so we had to search around for something to stir it with. We finally found an edger/scraper in the garage. I cleaned it up and it works great.
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.
-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.
-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)
-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)
Cover the remaining detergent and store in laundry room so it is ready for refilling the bottle. I have found a Gamma Seal works great for covering the bucket. It screws on easily and I don’t need to worry about spills when trying to pry off the other type of lid.
I love Gamma Seals and use them on any open 5-6 gallon bucket.
Making the soap takes about 15 minutes, then it sits overnight and is ready for use. The cost is around one cent per load. I don’t think anyone can compete with that price.
Now that I have some more detergent, I am off to do laundry!
